Our Junior and Senior Chess Team pictured with their chess coach, Mr Gary McNamara, and co-ordinator, Dr Chung
The Metropolitan Secondary Schools Chess Teams Competition began on May 1st. Each team consists of four players. Pal Buddhist School has two teams, one Senior (Years 11 and 12) and one Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) team competing in the South-West Region, which also involves Sefton High School, Cecil Hills High School, Macquarie Fields High School, St Gregory’s College and Hoxton Park High School. One match is played on Friday each week over nine weeks. Peter Tang of year 10 is our star player, winning all three of his games so far. In week 4, May 22nd, we registered our first match win when the Intermediate team defeated Sefton High School’s Junior team.
Our chess teams are fortunate to be under the tutelage of Gary McNamara, a highly-ranked chess player and a passionate chess teacher. Gary is running chess classes, available for all Pal Buddhist School students. With his help, we may look forward to more match wins in the competition.
